BLACK SOX TAKE 3/4 OF SERIES: MINERS CONTINUE SLUMP

Javier Baez Launches 4 Bombs

June 9th: Charlie Morton vs. Clayton Kershaw

Joplin: 6-7-0
Chicago: 7-15-0

WP:E. Ramos
LP: C. Sale

This game was the most gut wrenching loss of the season. The Black Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to Javier Baez's blast in the first.  Carlos Santana led the Miner comeback with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs off Clayton Kershaw.  Kershaw went 6 innings and left after surrendering 5 earned runs. The teams traded runs to give the Miners a 6-4 lead going into the 9th inning.  Craig Kimbrel was on the hill to pick up another save but the Black Sox' Jed Lowrie and Javier Baez launched bombs in the 9th to tie the game 6-6.  Joplin brought in ace Chris Sale to win the game in extra innings but Tyler White knocked in the winning run in the 10th, leaving the Miner faithful crying in their beer.

June 10th:  Danny Duffy vs. Carlos Martinez

Chicago 5-11-0

Joplin won this slugfest thanks to  Mookie Betts ( 6AB-5R-6H-1RBI-2B-3B) and David Peralta ( 5AB-2R-4H-6RBIs-2B-HR).  Danny Duffy continued to struggle ( 4.1IP-8H-5ER-3BB-5K) but Jessie Chavez picked up his 8th win.

June 11:  Marco Estrada vs. Madison Bumgarner
Chicago  8-9-0
Joplin     2-6-0

Javier Baez cranked out another home run and knocked in 3 runs while Charlie Blackmon  ( 5AB-2R-4H-1RBI-2B(2)-HR) and Eduardo Escobar ( 5AB-2R-2H-2RBI-2B-HR) also savaged the Miner pitching staff.  Marco Estrada dropped to 1-5 on the season.  Carlos Santana ( 4AB-2R-2H-RBI-2B-HR) provided the only bright spot for the Miners.

June 12:  Jaime Garcia vs. Richard Bleier

Chicago: 5-10-1
Joplin:    2-10-0

WP:  Drake
LP:   Jamie Garcia

Joplin's front office knew it was in trouble at the start of the season given the shortage of quality starters.  The Miners hoped they could throw out some cheap starters who could eat up some innings and a quality set of relievers could pick up some wins.   The strategy did not work out in this game.

The teams traded runs to make it 2-2 after 3.  Kris Bryant's RBI double and Phil Ervin's sacrifice fly accounted for the Black Sox runs while David Peralta's solo shot and Francisco Cordero's triple knocked in the Miners' runs. Chicago closed out the scoring onWilson Conteraras' 2 run double and Bryce Harper's solo shot in the 5th.
