CH4: MINERS SWEEP FLAMINGOS

Hyun-Jin Ryu shines in Joplin Debut 

The Miners opened the second half of the season by sweeping the #19 ranked Las Vegas Flamingos. The first two games were played in Las Vegas and the last two were played back in Joplin. 

 

Game 1:
Joplin 7-8-0
LVF:  4-8-2

Jamie Garcia vs. Mike Minor

David Peralta cranked out a 2 run HR in the 2nd to for a 2-0 Joplin lead.  Andrew McCutchen hit a solo shot in the 3rd to cut the score to 2-1.  Joplin added another run in the 4th on a Francisco Lindor error.  Sean Rodriguez hit a bases loaded double which cleared the bases and gave the Miners a 6-1 lead after 4 innings.  Austin Wynn added another run with a pinch hit RBI single to give Joplin a commanding 7-1 lead.  Miner pitcher Adam Warren gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 7-4.  Chris Sale took the mound in the 9th and struck out the side to save the 7-4 win.   John Brebbia picked up the win in relief while Mike Minor took the loss. 



Game 2:
Joplin:  12-9-1
LVF:  1-5-1

Hyun-Jin Ryu vs. Dan Straily

Joplin carpet bombed the Flamingos and Hyun-Jin Ryu threw 6 scoreless innings while striking out 8 to pick up a win in his first start of the year.  The Miners exploded for 9 runs in the 6th thanks to a Freddie Freeman grand slam, a 3 run shot by Yan Gomes and a Jose Iglesias RBI double.  The Miners added 3 more runs in the 8th for the 12-1 win.  


Game 3:
LVF: 2-8-0
Joplin: 7-11-0

Mashi Tanaka vs. Ivan Nova

Joplin jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after 4 innings thanks to a Yan Gomes 3 run blast, an Ender Inciarte run scoring double and back to back HRs by Freeman and Peralta.   Mashi Tanaka went 7 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 1 run while fanning 5.  Ivan Nova took the loss, allowing all 7 runs despite fanning 7 batters.


Game 4:
LVF: 3-5-0
Joplin: 6-9-0

Gio Gonzalez vs. Francisco Liriano

The Flamingos jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a Jose Briceno 2 run single and a Jemer Candelrio RBI double.  The Miners tied the game in the 5th.  Mookie Betts hit a RBI triple, Freeman knocked him in with a SF and Ender Inciarte added a RBI single.   Joplin doubled the lead in the 6th thanks to a 2 run single by Freeman and a run scoring groundout by Yan Gomes.   Gio Gonzalez went 6 innings to pick up his first win as a Miner and Chris Sale picked up his second save of the series by fanning the last Flamingo with runners in scoring position. 

 

Series Notes:

Miners' pitching went 4-0-2 with a 2.50 ERA.
Joplin hitters posted a 274/388/496 slash line.
