MINERS SWEEP THE BLUE WAVE AT THE MINE

CARLOS SANTANA HITS FOR THE CYCLE 

The Joplin Miners swept the Darien Blue Wave in a recent 4 game series. The Darien squad is basically an expansion squad and most league observers are impressed with the first year squad GM Lee Scholtz built for the 2019 BDBL season.  Despite the good press, the Miners took advantage of the Wave's major weakness:  starting pitching.

GAME 1
Darien:  6.9.0
Joplin: 9.14.1

WP; McFarland
LP: Cody Allen
S: Craig Kimbrel

HRs: Desmond, Betts, McCann

Notes:Both starters were shelled throughout the game.  Zimmerman (6.12.6.6.2.7) and Chris Sale (6.5.4.4.1.8) had their worst outings of the young season.  Miner catcher James McCann hit a dinger in the bottom of the 8th to give the Miners a 7-6 lead.  Kimbrel came in the 9th and retired the Wave in order to pick up another save.
 

GAME2
Darien: 5.9.3
Joplin: 9.14.1

WP: Charlie Morton  (5.4.1.1.1.5)
LP:  Matt Harvey ( 5.11.7.6.1.4)

HRs: Matt Olson, Chris Ianetta, David Peralta

Notes: The Miners took an early 7-0 lead after 4 innings and held on for the win.  Charlie Morton was pitching his best game to date until he left after 5 innings with a sore shoulder. 


GAME 3
Darien: 3.7.3
Joplin: 17.21.1

WP:  Tanaka (6 2/3.3.2.1.2.9)
LP:  F. Hernandez ( 4.15.12.11.3.5)

HRs: E. Rosario, A. Rosario, C. Santana, D. Peralta

Notes:  It is a shame when a great star like Felix Hernandez falls from grace in the eyes of the baseball gods.  Carlos Santana had his best game of the season, hitting for the cycle and scoring 4 runs.  Mashi Tanaka was quietly effective and picked up 9Ks in the game. 

 

GAME 4:
Darien: 2.3.0
Joplin: 6.9.1

WP: Danny Duffy ( 5.1.1.1.4.3)
LP: Wade Miley  ( 4.3.3.3.2.5)

HRs: Sean Rodriquez, David Peralta

Notes:  David Peralta hit a 3 run shot in the bottom of the 8th to give the Miners a 6-2 win. Danny Duffy only allowed 1 hit but 4 walks and 3 Ks had him reach his pitch count for the evening.

The Miners now stand 9-7 on the season with series against North Carolina, Bear Country and Las Vegas remaining on the Chapter 1 schedule.

2020CH1: MINERS GO 8-20/ FANS FEAR LONG SEASON

Neil Walker Chapter 1 MVP (351/393/544)  The Joplin Miners went 10-18 in Chapter 1.  Here are the series results:  Salem 0-4 Darien: 3-1 NCISP:3-1 Los Altos: 1-3 Ravenwood: 1-3 Kansas City: 2-2 Las Vegas: 0-4 Joplin fans were frustrated by the 1-5 record in 1 run games. There were a number of red flags in Chapter 1.  The pitching staff went 10-18 with a 5.35 ERA. Chris Sale, the ace of the staff, went 1-3 with a 6.14 ERA.  True, he did strike out 43 batters and only walked 7 in 19 innings but the ERA indicates opposing teams had no trouble scoring runs. Danny Duffy (2-2-4.85) and Tanner Roark ( 2-1-3.38) provided some respectable starts but the bullpen was simply nonexistent and the lack of cash to acquire additional pitching showed up in the bottom of the rotation.
