MINERS CONTINUE RETOOLING WITH MASSIVE TRADE

Eduardo Rodriguez Joins Miners

  The Miners won the only wildcard playoff game in BDBL history when Ryu and Sale outdueled Walker Buehler 1-0 in the 2019 playoffs.   Miner management acquired Ryu to give Sale some support in the 2019 playoffs but the transactions required the Miners to take on Gio Gonzalez's 10M contract for the 2020 season.  The deal gave the Miners another opportunity to win the 2019 OL championship and Joplin did manage to upset Los Altos before Salem beat Sale twice to capture the 2019 OL championship.  The Cowtippers went on to win the 2019 World Series.


With Sale having an off year in the 2019 MLB season and Gio Gonzalez's 10M contract limiting acquisition possibilities, the Miners began to rebuild the franchise.  On November 17, 2019, Joplin sent Charlie Morton and Freddie Freeman to Chicago for Charlie Blackmon,  Royce Lewis and Ian Anderson.

In Chapter  2, the Miners sent Blackmon, Chris Sale, Danny Duffy, Richard Gallardo, Sandy Gaston and Quinn Priester to the Infidels for Eduardo Rodriguez, Javy Guerra, Grant Cooper, Miguel Amaya, Simeon Woods-Richardson, Brent Honeywell and Jake Lamb.

The latest trade had a number of long term benefits.  Eduardo Rodriguez posted a 6.0 bWAR in 2019 and the he is signed through the 2021 season with a current 2.1M salary.  Second, Chris Sale, his cranky elbow and his 16M salary over the next two years is no longer on the books.  Third, the prospect acquisitions moved the Miners from 13th to 10th in the annual BDBL farm report.  More importantly, the Miners now have 6 of the  top 100 farmhands in the BDBL.   Fourth,  Joplin now has plenty of payroll flexibility for the 2021 free agent auction.

Good trades work for both teams so it was necessary to give up Charlie Blackmon and his great bat and you never can tell if Sale's arm will heal and he will return to his ace status.  The Infidels are now poised to go far in the 2020 BDBL playoffs.

SALEM SWEEPS MINERS IN SALEM

                                Peralta's Barrage Not Enough to Stop Sweep  The Salem Cowtippers swept the Joplin Miners at Sam Adams Stadium.  The sweep was a dangerous warning sign that Salem will be a tough team to beat in 2019.  The losses were bad enough but the way the team lost was even more troubling. Game 1 Joplin: 0-6-1 Salem: 4-4-0 Win:  Clay Buchholtz: 8-6-0-0-1-6 Loss:  Chris Sale: 6-4-4-2-1-11 HR: David Peralta (2) Salem's Jose Ramirez was the star of the show in this game. Ramirez led off the bottom of the second with a walk, moved to second on a one out error and scored on a 3 run homer by Danny Valencia.  The Tippers added a run in the 6th when Ramirez doubled, went to 3rd on a PB and scored on a SF.   Chris Sale has failed to post a win in his first two starts. MINERS FINISH 17-11 IN CHAPTER 1... 2 GAMES OUT OF FIRST

The Joplin Miners entered the 2019 BDBL season as the defending Ozzie League Champions.  Their world series appearance was the first time in franchise history. Going into the 2019 season, several major adjustments were required and the consensus among the BDBL press was a second place finish in the McGowan Division and a possible playoff appearance as the second wildcard in the 2019 season.  Now that one chapter of the season is in the books, the Miners find themselves with a 17-11 record and 2 games behind the hated Salem Cowtippers and the first seed in the wildcard game.  Jesse Chavez won the Miner MVP award in Chapter 1.  Chavez finished the chapter with a 5-1 record and struck out 23 while walking only 7.  Chavez' performance was a complete surprise and came just at the right time.  Not to say the pitching staff was bad in Chapter 1.  A 17-11 record along with a 2.97 ERA  was respectable.  Chris Sale was signed as a free agent in the off season and although he posted a
