After a 2018 World Series appearance and a 2019 trip to the Ozzie League Championship, it is time for the Miners to begin a rebuilding process which is necessary for the long term health of the organization.  Given the upcoming reduction in bonus money and some major salary problems, Joplin lost little time in addressing some of these problems.

In the first major trade of the off season, the Miners sent Charlie Morton and Freddie Freeman to the Chicago Black Sox for Charlie Blackmon, Royce Lewis and Ian Anderson.

Moving Freeman and Morton was a tough decision but Freeman was going to be paid 11.5M through 2022 and Joplin management could not justify such a long term expenditure given the projected loss of bonus money.  Morton was one of the best pitchers in baseball in MLB 2019 but he only had one year left on his contract and given the Miners had significant obstacles to making another run at the playoffs he seemed like an ideal candidate for trade talks.

Charlie Blackmon returns to the Miners with one of the best hitters in baseball and a 1 year contract.  Royce Lewis and Ian Anderson are two of the top prospects in baseball and should provide some of the building blocks needed to rebuild the franchise.

Joplin acquired Sean Newcomb from Southern Cal in exchange for Jose Iglesias.  Iglesias is another starter with only one year remaining in his contract so he was dealt for Sean Newcomb, a lefty with a blazing fastball and some control problems. Atlanta projects him as a 2020 starter and has a chance to break out as a stable LSP.
